The Cross

"There are many paths but only one journey" Naomi Judd

They say a picture paints a thousand words, so it goes without saying that images of our dearest and most loved, bring to the fore a plethora of emotions and memories.

We were recently approached by Ann Sutton to engrave an image of a cross into a crystal. The picture was not of any ordinary cross, but one that was split into two pieces.
We at Fine City Crystals asked ourselves "why would anyone want an image of a broken cross encapsulated in Crystal?"
After reading Ann's story we understood why.

The back story of this cross is fascinating and inspiring.
What follows, is a synopsis of the story behind this particular cross, as related in Ann's own words.

"My Dad was a Paratrooper with the 9th Battalion 6th Airborne and he was given the tiny metallic cross by a monk in the Maredous Abbeye Monastery, Dinnant in 1944, he wore it round his neck with his dog tags - but on the day he parachuted into Germany on the Rhine Crossing, on the 23rd March 1945.... he didn't have time to put it round his neck and placed it in his front pocket. He landed in the thick of a machine gun post and was shot at several times, wounded his hand and was sent to hospital, three days later he was undressing in the hospital and there was a 'ping' as a spent bullet fell from his string vest...he checked his jacket and inside the pocket was the little cross!, bent and damaged. It clearly stopped the bullet, deflecting it away from his heart (which would surely have killed him. Either side of the cross in his pocket were grenades and rounds of bullets. Truly amazing." -Ann Sutton

It is truly amazing.
There is always the eternal question we ask ourselves,... what if things had worked out differently, what if our lives had taken a different path? What if things had ended differently on that fateful day?
Sometimes even objects can engender a great deal of emotion and rekindle memories linked to a good fortune narrative such as this one.

A truly remarkable story and we thank Ann for sharing it with us and giving her permission to share with all of you.
